Butte County: Wood Ducks Survive Knocks Low-tech Effort helps resuscitate rare, attractive waterfowl species
Glen Martin, San Francisco Chronicle Environmental Writer
[2005-05-08]
There has been an effort to resuscitate a rare bird to the Sacramento River and delta. The program is sponsored by the California Waterfowl Association and the California Department of Fish and Game. The effort is a low-cost, low-tech program that aims at helping wood ducks. The wood duck population has suffered because they prefer a riparian habitat to nest in. During the past century niney percent of the riparian habitat has been destroyed. The program provides wood ducks with nesting boxes that are maintained by volunteers. They have also been restoring former rice fields back into marsh lands. The program seems to be helping the woods duck population make a strong recovery.
