This site is located at River Mile 234-R, approximately 10 miles south of Red Bluff.
Site Description
This 757 acre unit, located in Tehama County, is owned by USFWS. The property has 200 acres undergoing restoration (formerly walnut orchard), as well as 557 acres of pre-existing riparian habitat. Approximately 107 acres are now located on the left bank, after the river cut through the northeast portion of the unit, losing 66 acres to the river channel.
Vegetation Wildlife
The riparian habitat consists mostly of cottonwood and mixed riparian forests, riparian scrub, herbland cover, annual grassland, and gravel bars. Special vegetation profiles include low-terrace sandbar willow, and mid-terrace mixed riparian forest. Special wildlife use includes fall-migrant yellow warbler and willow flycatcher, bank swallow colonies, and river otter.
Current Land Use
Eighty-five acres of this unit (gravel bar and southern tip of Mooney Island) are open to the activities listed. The remaining 531 acres are designated as sanctuary and are closed to public use. Please visit sacramentovalleyrefuges.fws.gov for further details.
