The park is at the border of Shasta and Siskiyou counties, just south of the town of Dunsmuir, north of Lake Shasta.
Site Description
Adjacent to the Castle Crags State Park the California Wilderness Act of 1984 created this wilderness area. The area was covered with glaciers during the ice age, which left several lakes in the area. The geology of the area was mostly formed by volcanic activity. There are granite and other volcanic rock fomations, called plutons. There are 27.8 miles of developed trail maintained by the USDA Forest Service. The four main trails are known as The Castle Dome Trail, Indian Springs Trail, Root Creek Trail and Bob's Hat Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail also goes 19 miles through the area. Topology Hydrology
Root Creek, Soda Creek, Castle Creek as well as the Upper Sacramento River all run through the area. Part of the Klamath Mountain Geologic Province.
Vegetation Wildlife
The trees vary from live oak in the lower elevations to conifer forests up higher. There are 300 different types of wildflowers. There are many birds in the area, such as the golden eagle, peregrine falcon, and sparrows. The mammals in the area consist of ground squirrels, coyote, black tail deer, bobcat, mountain lion and black bear. There are rattlesnakes in the area as well as common lizards.
