Adjacent to the Castle Crags State Park the California Wilderness Act of 1984 created this wilderness area. The area was covered with glaciers during the ice age, which left several lakes in the area. The geology of the area was mostly formed by volcanic activity. There are granite and other volcanic rock fomations, called plutons. There are 27.8 miles of developed trail maintained by the USDA Forest Service. The four main trails are known as The Castle Dome Trail, Indian Springs Trail, Root Creek Trail and Bob's Hat Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail also goes 19 miles through the area. The Fishing regulations on the Upper Sacramento change from year to year. For the most updated set of laws refer to "California Sport Fishing Regulations" page 39, Section 7.50 (156) a-c or contact the California Fish and Game (916) 653-4899 (http://www.fgc.ca.gov/html/fishregs.html)
