Location Description
The project area is located on the west side of the Sacramento River in the vicinity of the Hwy 162 bridge.
Site Description
The triangular-shaped property resides to both the north and south of Hwy 162 and occupies roughly 2800 feet of frontage along the Sacramento River.
Topology Hydrology
Gaines is within the 100-year flood zone and represents the only barrier between the Sacramento River and Razor Slough.
Vegetation Wildlife
Mature orchard trees occupy the majority of the land within the project area. There are two patches of remnant riparian vegetation, one to the north and one along the west edge separating the project site from Razor Slough. Wildlife species present or potentially occurring in the area consist of typical Sacramento River riparian inhabitants such as Wood duck, Mallard, Western Pond turtle, Black-headed grosbeak, Yellow warbler, Mourning dove, Willow flycatcher, Swainson’s hawk, and Valley Elderberry Longhorn beetle.
Current Land Use
Approximately 29 acres of the river bottom property is currently managed as a walnut orchard with the remaining acreage present as riparian habitat. The project site is estimated to have lost approximately 17 acres of land to erosion in the past ten years.
Adjacent Land Use
Gaines is surounded in three directions by USFWS refuge lands (Sol Norte), separated by a narrow section of Razor Slough to the west. The east edge of the property is bordered by the Sacramento River.
Access Description
Access to the Gaines site is provided by a paved road off of Hwy 162. This road appears to cross-neighboring parcels.
