The project area is located directly adjacent to Irvine Finch State Park on the west bank of the Sacramento River, directly south of the Hwy 32 bridge.

This flood-prone property consists of approximately 20 acres of walnut orchards and occupies roughly 900 feet of frontage along the Sacramento River.

The close proximity of Gianella Landing to the Sacramento River requires the area be particularly adapted to flooding. This property is in Flood Hazard Zone A and consequently floods about every ten years despite protection from the adjacent “J” Levee.

Mature orchard trees occupy the lands within and around the project area. There are some patches of remnant riparian vegetation along the west edge of the Sacramento River, directly across the river, and along Dunning Slough located just downstream. Wildlife species of special concern either present or potentially occurring in the area consist of Western pond turtle in the nearby slough, Black-headed and Blue grosbeak, Willow flycatcher, Yellow warbler, California quail, and Wood duck. Existing shaded riverine aquatic habitat is present on the neighboring downstream property as well as near the bank across the river. This habitat could potentially harbor such fish species as Chinook salmon and Sacramento splittail.

Gianella Landing is currently managed as a small-scale walnut orchard. The property will be converted to riparian habitat in order to expand Sacramento River public access at Irvine Finch and increase habitat connectivity along the Sacramento River.

Walnut orchards are found to the south and west, the “J” Levee and Sacramento River are located to the east, and Irvine Finch State Park resides just north of the project area.

Access to the Gianella Landing site is provided by the road that allows access to Irvine Finch State Park off Hwy 32, just west of the Hwy 32 bridge.
